The house is quieter than it should be. The food dish is still in its corner, and you keep listening for feet that are not coming. Some people will tell you it was just an animal, but God will not. The One who notices every sparrow's fall made your companion, delighted in making them, and called that creation good. Their loyalty, their gladness at the sound of your key in the door, was a small daily echo of a love that keeps no conditions. The psalm says His "tender mercies are over all his works." That mercy covered your friend all their days, and it covers you now in the quiet house. Grieving them is honest, so thank God for the gift and let the tears come. Real gifts are worth real tears.

A prayer for this moment
Father, thank You for the years of unguarded love You gave me through this creature of Yours. Comfort me in the quiet, and teach me gratitude inside the grief. Amen.
