For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

It gets dark early now, and somewhere a single candle burns against the whole month's hurry. Isaiah wrote "unto us a child is born" seven hundred years before Bethlehem, which means God's people spent seven centuries doing what Advent asks of you: waiting on a promise with lamps burning. While the world sprints to December 25th, the church walks, one candle a week, practicing the posture that shapes the whole life of faith. He said He would come, and He came. He said He will come again, and we wait, awake. So resist the sprint a little this year. Light something. Read the old promises slowly, and let the ache of not yet do its deep work. The manger proves the waiting was never wasted.

A prayer for this moment
Come, Lord Jesus. In these waiting weeks, slow me down, light my lamp, and make my heart a Bethlehem: small, unlikely, and ready. Amen.
