Children are indeed a heritage from the LORD, and the fruit of the womb is His reward.

You counted the fingers and toes in the delivery room, and heaven had counted them first. The psalm calls this child "an heritage of the LORD", an inheritance entrusted rather than an accident of biology, and that reframes the whole sleepless blur you have just entered. You are stewarding a soul God imagined, formed, and assigned to your particular arms. No steward does it perfectly, and no steward does it alone; the Father who gave the gift stays for the raising. So when the 3 a.m. feeding comes, and when the wonder catches in your throat again, know that both are holy. Welcome, little heritage. Well done, weary stewards. Tonight, before you fall into bed, pray one sentence of blessing over that crib.
